SUMMARY
There are nearly 650 medieval churches in Norfolk which make them an extremely important habitat for lichens in a county with little or no natural rock outcrops. Most churches and their yards support about 50 or 60 different species and some of the better have over 100. A number are very rare or occur well away from their main area of distribution. One such is Lecania coerulescens which has only ever been recorded from two sites in the world. One in North Yorkshire, where it was known in the nineteenth century, and one in mid-Norfolk where it grows on a south-facing wall and two window ledges. The main threat is from building restoration work.
